About the University
The University of Cape Town (UCT) is the oldest university in South Africa and the oldest university in Sub-Saharan Africa in continuous operation. UCT is the highest ranking university in Africa and is a proud member of the African Research Universities Alliance. The department of Civil Engineering (CIV) was established in 1910 and offers a modern, state-of-the-art teaching and research programme across all key areas of civil engineering, including in transportation. Our undergraduate programme is accredited by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) and recognised throughout the world in terms of the Washington Accord. The Centre is a multidisciplinary research and postgraduate teaching body that aims to be internationally recognised for producing relevant research, developing skilled professionals, and advocating for innovative practices and institutional arrangements for the management of complex transport systems in the dynamic cities of South Africa and other African countries.
